From Chaos to Clarity: Solving a Hiring Problem I Saw Again and Again

From Chaos to Clarity: Solving a Hiring Problem I Saw Again and Again
From minimum-wage barista to Director of Operations, my experience at Biggby Coffee showed me firsthand that hiring isn't hard, structure is.

For over eight years, I worked in the quick-service industry at Biggby Coffee, a regional Michigan coffee franchise. I started from the bottom as a minimum-wage barista, hired to be a consistent opener. You know the one, the person who gets up at 4 a.m. to brew the coffee for your morning commute.

Even in that entry-level role, I quickly noticed a constant: hiring. The industry has a high turnover rate, and the environment is fast-paced and chaotic as they come. There was always an open position, and if someone wasn’t focused on filling it, the entire cafe started slipping further into chaos. Biggby Coffee is a company with a heart of gold, but even the best locations must stay on top of hiring.

As I progressed through the company from barista to assistant manager, to manager, and eventually Director of Operations, hiring was, to put it mildly, a constant pain point. Each role gave me a new perspective on the problem. Managers often claim “there are no applicants,” but in my experience, this usually comes down to a lack of structure around hiring. It’s a task that gets pushed aside for other urgent demands such as shift coverage, schedules, or the customer who insists on using an expired coupon.

A Leap of Faith into AI Hiring

When the opportunity arose to pilot Voysly, a new technology aimed at solving this exact problem, I jumped at it. I had the experience and knowledge to know the pain points firsthand and I wanted to be part of the solution. But I also had doubts. Would an AI interviewer really work? Would applicants actually engage with it?

The answer surprised me. As I onboarded more clients into the system, I was blown away by how quickly applicants responded to interview invitations. Every candidate had the opportunity to showcase themselves on their own time and on their own terms. They could complete the interview multiple times if needed, providing a more complete picture of their skills and fit. Using the scoring tools, I could make accurate, data-informed decisions while focusing on the candidates who were genuinely interested in being hired. Ghosted interviews became far less frequent.

Solving the Pattern

Seeing the results firsthand confirmed what I had suspected all along: Voysly solves a problem that every quick-service location faces. It provides a disciplined, structured way to assess candidates and make faster, more confident hiring decisions.

  • The longer a role stays open, the more it costs the business.

  • The less information managers have, the more they rely on gut instinct.

Voysly provides clarity, consistency, and respect for every applicant. Resumes are assessed without bias, every candidate gets engaged, and the final hiring decisions remain fully human.

Using Voysly reminded me that hiring problems aren’t isolated incidents, they’re patterns. And with the right tools and approach, those patterns can be solved.
